National Volunteers Week 2021

Volunteers come from all walks of life with a variety of skill sets

In line with the theme of this years National Volunteers Week 2021– Recognise, Reconnect, Reimagine, we are holding an event for our amazing volunteers this year.

We launched the Burdekin Volunteer Program during National Volunteers Week 2020, which means we are celebrating the first birthday of our program as well as National Volunteers Week. Our volunteers will be treated to a meal plus a Certificate of Appreciation from our CEO who will be attending along with some Burdekin staff. We are really looking forward to it.

We are also currently launching our Volunteer Program in the Inner West. Our hope is that by next year there will be even more volunteers who have given their time and expertise to celebrate.

National Youth Homelessness Conference 2021

The National Youth Homelessness Conference 2021 (NYHC) takes place on June 15th – 16th. The event will be online and is organised with the aim to develop a National Strategy to End Youth Homelessness.

The focus for conference discussions and post-conference actions will be a joint NGO sector-Government task-force and consultation process to develop the National Strategy to End Youth Homelessness. This will not be the product of a particular organisation or government. Instead it aims to be a joint NGO-Government strategy that will serve as a reference for the planning and implementation of state and territory governments.

In 2019 the National Youth Homelessness Conference was held in March in Melbourne. Our Patron, Professor Brian Burdekin, AO was the Keynote Speaker and our CEO, Justene Gordon was one of nine panelists. You can read more about their contributions here.

The National Youth Homelessness Conference 2021 is organised by Youth Development Australia and National Youth Commission Australia. This year, NYHC 2021 Speakers will include leading international and Australian experts in the field, front line service providers, educators, employers, young people sharing lived experience, and more. Our Patron, Professor Brian Burdekin, AO will be one of the speakers.

Early bird tickets are available now as well as concession rates for anyone aged 30 years and under, and concession cardholders.

Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2021

It is time for a National Strategy to end youth homelessness

Youth Homelessness Matters Day 2021 takes place on Wednesday 21st April.

The day aims to raise awareness and invite public discussion about youth homelessness so that we can develop sustainable and innovative solutions for not only supporting the needs of homeless young people but supporting their dreams.

Youth Homelessness Matters

Raising awareness and inviting public discussion is vital. This is because Australia needs a national strategy to end youth homelessness and until such time this has happened, awareness days like these are instrumental in reminding us that a lot of work needs to be done. We need to ensure that our most vulnerable young people don’t fall between the cracks of services and opportunities.

We currently support children and young people aged 9 to 24 and in March of this year, The Burdekin Association provided a home for 83 children & young people across the Northern Sydney and Inner West regions.

Our work is not done and we continue to stretch ourselves.

There is a National Youth Homelessness Conference taking place this year, you might like to join the discussion there.

We acknowledge the Aboriginal people of the Cadigal and Gayamaygal Clans. We acknowledge the Country on which we live, work, and gather as being Aboriginal land.

We acknowledge the lands, waterways and skies that are connected to Aboriginal people. We honour them and pay our deepest respects to their Elders past, present and emerging.

We respect their rightful place within our communities, and we value their ancient cultural knowledge and practices.

We deeply respect that this will always be Aboriginal land and we will honour and follow the first peoples’ values in caring for the Country and for preserving their culture.

We deeply value that Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people are the oldest living culture in the world and we will continue to work with their peoples and communities to ensure their cultures endure and remain strong.
