Did you know?
Government currently pays for a child until they turn 18, after that they must finance and support themselves. Research shows that leaving care before a young person is ready for independence leads to poor outcomes and potential mental health issues.
Can you imagine spending the best part of your life in residential or foster care and having multiple placements throughout your life? This is what happens to a large number of young Australians and then when they reach 18 they are no longer considered children and therefore often forced into a life of early independence. Some young people manage the challenge well, others don’t. We want to be there for those who need some extra time to get onto their own feet.
18 is a time when most young people are vulnerable and impressionable, they don’t yet have the life skills needed to support themselves nor family to rescue them when bad things happen to them or when they mess up. Many find themselves in trouble, many feel isolated and abandoned. Typically a young person who has been in care or experienced childhood trauma is actually less ready than a typical teenager is to deal with the expectations of an independent adult life.
Kicked out when they need help the most!
The current abrupt end to support is needlessly harsh and heartless on young people – think how your life might have turned out without support, think of a time when things were tough but you had someone to help you, someone who cared, a shoulder to cry on, clothes for an interview – a Christmas dinner with all the trimmings – that is not the case for many young people… but it doesn’t have to be this way!
This year our Christmas appeal asks you to help us to continue to give young people the support they need past the age of 18. We need an additional $150-$300 per week per young person exiting care to ensure a smooth transition into independent living. We want to help prevent a life of homelessness, prevent mental ill health, prevent instability. We want to support our young people so that they can go to their school formal, have internet access to study or apply for jobs, to find their dream job, words of comfort or a shoulder to cry on, a $30 birthday present and more importantly, someone who remembers their birthday and is there for them to go through the highs and lows! We also want to provide them with continued high level case management and after hours support including on weekends to keep them on track! Life happens 24/7 not just from 9 to 5!
A positive and fulfilling life past the age of 18.
Don’t we all deserve this? We see too many examples where we are going wrong in society, but there is room to turn this situation around. Let’s get into the Christmas spirit and give young people the positive start in life they need an deserve!
